My KJ Leg

The Race where my soleus became "quite angry" with me.

The Race where my soleus became “quite angry” with me.

Yes, I just called my leg a “Kill Joy.”  More specifically, I’m calling out my Soleus Muscle.  My who-what?  Yeah, that was my reaction too.  This is a muscle around your mid-calf area.

The soleus muscle is found in the back of the leg above the Achilles tendon extending up to the main calf muscle. The soleus is a group of strong muscles which are essential for walking and running. They also help in stabilizing the ankle hence preventing us from falling forward when standing.

It has put a pause in my running and it couldn’t have come at a worse time!

I joined the “No Boundaries 5k Training Running Group” with our local Fleet Feet that just opened.  Our training group, “NoBo” for short, started in May and ended with a 5k race in August.  We would meet 2x/wk and would go out with mentors rain or holy humid hotness or shine.  This running group and crossing that finish line in our Graduation Race in August did it for me, I caught the running bug. I did trigger my mini injury the week of that Graduation Race.  I was too excited and probably ran harder than I should have (it was taper week after all).  I started to feel a pain in my right leg.  I was ok though.  Just some ice and I was fine.

I signed up for 2 more races in September and I was able to run one.  I guess I ran that last one too hard.  I did set a PR though 🙂  I stretched pre and post race, but all throughout, I kept looking at my Garmin and seeing that I was pacing at under 11 minutes which was miraculous.  I tried to dial it down a bit because I kept thinking that I was going too fast (for me).  I just couldn’t.  I had the adrenalin going and my momentum was just carrying me!   I felt good after the race.  I knew I would need to ice my leg when I got home, but still, I felt great!

What wasn’t a good idea was that I was in the drive-thru line for Steak N Shake for over 30 minutes.   I usually wouldn’t mind that because there were a lot of people and it means they’re making things fresh.  What I didn’t realize was that sitting in my truck (SUV) for that long wasn’t good for my leg at all.  Once I got home and tried to get out, I almost fell because of the excruciating pain I felt.  I was literally hopping on one leg into the house and limping for the next week and half.   I missed the second September race I signed up for because I was still limping, but it was ok b/c it was also my daughters’ birthday party.

I stayed away from running for a week and half and attempted to run with Buddy that Tuesday.  I went 2 tenths of a mile  on a jog and was just done.  I just walked Buddy…no more attempts of running.  I was supposed to run a 5k that Friday, not happening.

I went to Fleet Feet and talked to one of the guys that worked there.  We spoke about and it and he was right in saying it wasn’t a shin splint (this whole time I thought it was).   He said to try to run through the pain, but if it went over a certain threshhold, to stop.  I did just that on Friday night and ended up running 3.19.  I had some pain and so the ice came out again. I guess I could’ve run a 5k afterall.  It would have been  my slowest, but still.

I tried running again a couple of days later…the pain was back.  I finally went to see a Physical Therapist / Sports Medicine Doc.  That’s who told me my “soleus is quite angry” at me.  He  made me run a little on the treadmill and said, “I notice your limping”.  I simply said, “yes, because it hurts!”.

So, I’m supposed to start therapy for at least an hour 2x/wk.  I haven’t heard anything yet.  Maybe my regular dr. hasn’t given him a prescription yet (hasn’t given me one at all).

I’m being stubborn and ran on the treadmill on Monday.  It wasn’t too bad, but I was really going much slower than I usually would…about a 14+ minute pace.  Maybe that should be my pace for awhile.  I only went for 1.85 miles, but still, better than nothing.

I really hope my leg starts to cooperate soon.  There are 3 5ks I want to run in October and November.

5 months later…

Well, well, well…it’s been forever and a day since I posted. Geez…almost 5 months?!?!? I just was so consumed in everything that I never really got to blog about everything…living in the moment, I guess (plus, laziness and procastinating).  Facebook and Instagram got updated pretty regularly though.

So, what’s been going on these last few months? Well, here it is in bullets:

  • I fell off the healthy wagon.  I gained all my weight back that I lost from when I did the Ultimate Reset.  I am slowly getting back to eating better, but not having much success. I think I need a really structured plan to keep me going.
  • I joined a 5k Training Group in May and am happy to report that I ran my 2nd 5k in August (my first 5k was last year when I was trying to train on my own).  Ran another one 9/14 with a personal best of 34:52.12 11:15/M.  I’m going to work on trying to get faster and also a 10k.  My ultimate running goal is to run a Half Marathon.
  • I started Focus T25 which is a 25 minute daily workout with Shaun T. (Insanity / Hip Hop Abs instructor).  I did well the first few weeks then, of course, started slacking.  I am 2 weeks from being finished so I’m working on doing my best.  I want my shirt dagnabbit.  I’m afraid my results aren’t as great as I wanted them to be because of my poor eating habits (oh summer bbqs and beers)!
  • My parents finally came out to visit us in the middle of the cornfields this summer.
  • Parents watched the girls while hubby and I had a quick getaway to Montego Bay, Jamaica…just the two of us.  It was so weird not having to look for kids or feed kids or put kids to bed.  It allowed us to reconnect and we just chilled all day and night.  ahhhh…take me back!
  • My dad, uncle and cousin got the girls into fishing!
  • We had a few bbqs this summer where we introduced some Filipino dishes to our neighbors / guests (pork bbq stix, lumpia, etc.).
  • Besides my parents, we had hubby’s cousin and my brother and his family come and visit us too 🙂  Was quite a busy and entertaining summer!
  • Went on a few roadtrips this summer both to take our visitors and just for us…Chicago x2, St. Louis and Indianapolis.
  • Our neighborhood has had quite the turnover.  It seems we kicked all the old people out and the ones with younger kids are moving in…which means that our kids are always outdoors playing and it’s great except I always have an eye out for Shrimp.
  • My girls are back to school.  Beans is now in 2nd grade and my little Razz started Kindergarten.  I’m now home alone with 1 kid and it’s weird.  Shrimpie is definitely a lot better without her sisters around.  No hitting, screaming, etc
  • Razz and Shrimp just had their joint birthday party a couple of weekends ago and fun was had by all.  Razz turned 6 and Shrimp turned 3.

I think that pretty much sums it all up…I may make more detailed entries on some of these, but in the meantime, here are some pics 🙂

beh…

thumbs down for being sick! :(

thumbs down for being sick! 😦

So my last fitness post was about me working out 7 days straight. I rested b/c I was all kinds of sore on Wednesday. Yesterday, I was sneezing and blowing my nose all day. Now, my throat is all itchy and here I am…sick…AGAIN. I am SO sick of being sick it’s not even funny.

The big girl always brings home germs from school and she gets sick, but usually gets over it after a day or 2. Then, #2 gets sick…then #3 and then me. I stay home with 2 and 3 and so if they’re sick, it’s just a matter of time until I catch it. I’m really surprised I’m not immuned to all the germies yet.

With #2 and #3 being sick, I can’t go to the gym during lunch b/c I don’t think Child Care will take them in if they’re sick. Besides, there are twin babies that are there during lunch and I don’t want them getting the twins sick…poor babies and poor mommy!

I actually dream of being on the elliptical during lunch watching SATC reruns on E! (don’t judge…lol). It makes the elliptical time go faster and then boom 500+ calories burned just by watching 2 episodes! Instead, I’m home trying to avoid old “comfort” food I used to enjoy when sick – aka chocolates and chips, etc. I should just go make myself an egg white spinach omelet or something…take the edge off. lol

7

Happens to be my favorite number (typical, I know…but hey, we even got married on 07.07.07) and also the number of days in a row that I have been to the gym.

Days 1-3 (Weds-Fri) last week, I went during lunch and had my girls in child care. I did elliptical work, mainly, and a little bit of weights.

Day 4 (Saturday) was family gym day – basketball fun and weights.

Day 5 (Sunday) was a demo for Pilates Reformer. 30 minutes of it and I was sore from that and Saturday’s weights.

Day 6 (Monday) was a full hour of the Pilates Reformer class.

Day 7 (yesterday, Tuesday) was an hour of Aqua Dance.

To say I’m sore is a bit of an understatement. Sad part is, I usually don’t feel full on soreness until 2 days after. So tomorrow, we’ll see if I can even get out of bed. But you know what? It’s a fantabulous SORE. I love it. I can even kind of suck in my belly now! Yes, that’s a HUGE deal.

Been using my Garmin Forerunner 110 to see how comparable the numbers are between it and the elliptical. It was pretty close when I forgot to change my weight down, but when I did, there was a noticeable difference between the 2. Still, I like to see the numbers. Didn’t realize I was such a numbers gal (just don’t ask me for any algebraic equations or calculus mumbo jumbo…it’s been WAY too long). It’s nice to use this bad boy even if I’m not using it for running outdoors and tracking my distance, etc.

Ultimate Reset was a total kickstart to my new lifestyle. Still eating healthy 90% of the time and now working out again. SUPER glad I did the reset. I can’t wait to see where I am in a month from now. I don’t know if I can keep going to the gym every single day, but I will go as much as I can because, why not?

Ultimate Reset – Finito!

Yes, yes, yes! I did it!

It’s been 2 1/2 weeks since I finished the Ultimate Reset and let me tell you, it’s one of the BEST things I’ve ever done for myself! I feel refreshed, renewed, invigorated, energetic and all of this with NO caffeine what-so-ever! I have learned so much about food and myself. I’ve learned that I can control my eating. I learned that I don’t need to constantly snack on junk food, etc. I learned about new food and how to cook new food and even how to cook other foods I knew of before. I like how I feel, I like how I look and I like that I know I can keep getting better with myself – inside and out.

Here I am Post Reset after I just got my blood drawn (I actually left the house, hence why I actually have a little bit of make-up on).

So, how did I do? After 21 days, I lost 11.7 (we’ll say 12) pounds…over 13 inches overall. All that with NO EXERCISE. Just clean eats and taking daily supplements!

THE BIGGEST and BEST NEWS? My cholesterol dropped 103 points!
Yes, that’s correct. 103 points. From 246 to 143. I was thinking I would only drop 20 or 30 points which would mean that I would still be on medication, but NOPE. 103 points = no medication for me!!!

2 1/2 weeks later and I’m still 90% eating clean – no caffeine, minimal alcohol (drinks when my girlfriends and I went to Chicago and I had to water down my 2nd drink), not too much sugar and still having healthy meals. I will have treats here and there, but for the most part? I’ve still been cooking healthy meals from the Reset Recipe book. In fact, my girlfriends came to visit last week and I would make my own separate meals. The only time I didn’t is when we went to Chicago for a day. My stomach paid for it b/c I was so umcomfy! lol Too many “new” things going into mah belly all at once (meats, etc.).

I finally got my bum back to the gym yesterday and did the elliptical. I will probably go back again today. I’m still debating on whether or not to start TurboFire again, but I think I like going to the gym…it gets me out of the house. Let’s not forget I’m a WAHM who also stays home with a 5 year old, 2 year old AND 1 year old pup.

Anyway, I’m excited to be working out again b/c my body (on the inside) is at its prime thanks to the Ultimate Reset. I still have a lot of work to do, but I’m definitely better off now than when I started.

Any questions, just let me know. I am willing to answer – to the best of my ability!

And let me leave you with this…My Ultimate Reset Food Gallery. My meals for the 21 days during the reset.

Wellness and Fitness on the Mind

ellipticalAll weekend, I’ve just been thinking about fitness and what I can do to keep consistent.  Everything from diet to exercise to calorie counting gadgets (BodyBugg, Polar FT40 or sticking to my good ol’ Garmin Forerunner110).  I need something to count my calories while I’m working out without being on a machine (treadmill/elliptical) which is what I’ve been on so I can see the calories.  I need to see the numbers.  I never thought I was a numbers kind of gal, but I guess I am.  Anyway, I’ve been trying to get in the groove to get myself going…I need to lower my cholesterol.  One main ingredient that I didn’t do is go to the gym / workout.  I went Friday (pic on left), but not Saturday or Sunday.

I ate well and healthy Saturday, but not Sunday.  portobellostuffedwithturkeyetcHad much too much wine Saturday night so that just totally nixed the whole eating healthy and well, I’m sure of it.  That pic was leftovers from Saturday all rolled into 1 – ground turkey w/spinach & rosemary stuffed in portobello mushroom cap.  Also had left over veggie fried quinoa (instead of rice) so I just put both that in the cap too.  Recipe inspired by watch_me_shrink and damndeliciious.

So, the scale tells me this morning that I gained weight, again.  I am now at my highest weight ever whilst not carrying a child – although I look like I could be about 6 or 7 months pregnant if I don’t “suck it in” or sit/stand “wrong”.

Part of my weekend research was checking out some pics/recipes of Instagram members and their healthy eats (watch_me_shrink) has some great looking eats and are healthy too!  I also was looking at Beach Body Instructor, Chalene Johnson’s page trying to get inspired…and I was (she’s creator of TurboFire, by the way)..  But, looking at pictures on a phone isn’t going to make all my weight magically disappear nor will it lessen my cholesterol.

I need to get back on TurboFire and/gym mode.  I need to eat better more often than not, not the other way around.  I need to detox/cleanse or something.  So, next on my agenda will be going on the BeachBody Ultimate Reset plan.  21 days on a STRICT diet (Lord, Help me…give me strength) and no working out.  I hope that doesn’t make me lose motivation to work and instead, have such a great outcome that all I want to do is maximize results by working out.  Once that is done, I will go back to gym/TurboFire (I LOVED TurboFire and got good results with it, I just wasn’t consistent).

I am going to try to make myself accountable by either posting here and/Instagram as to my foods, my progress, my ups and downs.  I haven’t shared this website / instagram account with my BeachBody Coach yet and I’m not sure why.  I don’t know if that will help or hinder me. Maybe I don’t want him to see all my past failed attempts at trying to get fit?   Maybe because I don’t want him to judge me?  I don’t think he would, but…I don’t know.   I am friends with him on FB so that should be good enough, right?  I like this part of the world being my “outlet” my “anonymous” account where not too many people I know IRL know about it.  There are a couple, but not too many and I’d like to keep it that way.  Besides, I am friends w/almost everyone I know IRL (and about 3 bloggers) on Facebook anyway.

If you want to find out more about TurboFire or the Ultimate Reset or even P90X, Insanity, etc., you can check my BeachBody website where I am a “coach” – just for formality so I can get discounts.  I haven’t coached anyone – not yet.  My beachbody website is beachbodycoachDOTcom/bzmomma – wordpress isn’t letting me link it for some reason…I have to read into that.
